Vita Sees Global Sales Boost

News

The last couple of weeks have seen the PS Vita experiencing a boost in sales both in America (traditionally a difficult market for the console to penetrate) and once again a boost in Japan. While certainly still not the level of sales that the Vita needs to position itself on a major footing, at least in the US, it is certainly a step in the right direction.

In Japan, the Vita regained it’s spot as the second best selling console for the week ending 15th June according to the latest sales figures released by Famitsu. Previously, the chart had been dominated by the Wii U which had experienced a massive upsurge in sales following the release of Mario Kart 8.

  1. Nintendo 3DS LL – 24,135
  2. PS Vita – 12,850
  3. Wii U – 10,366
  4. PS4 – 7,351
  5. PS3 – 6,832
  6. Nintendo 3DS – 5,390
  7. PSP – 2,647
  8. PS Vita TV – 1,041
  9. Xbox 360 – 131

It is interesting to note that the PS4 is still struggling to make real inroads although it is fighting back against the PS3. It is believed that the current bias towards “Western” style games is influencing the sale of the hardware right now and this should be worth monitoring as more games are released developed in Japan.

Onto the US and Vita sales for May reached a figure of 56,000 units. This was an increase of 1,600% over the previous figures for April where the Vita only managed to sell 3,000 in the territory. It has been reported that this boost can be attributed to the release of the PS Vita Slim, along with a brand new PS Vita bundle featuring Borderlands 2 and poor stock availability prior to May. Regardless, this renewed interest in the console is a positive sign but this needs to be maintained beyond one or two months for the Vita to have any real long-term success.
