First Impressions: Zen Pinball 2 – Ant-Man (PS Vita)

Zen Pinball 2 Ant-Man PS Vita

It’s hard to believe, but Zen Studios have now released over 60 tables for Zen Pinball 2 making it the biggest pinball game currently available for the PS Vita. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a fan of horror, sci-fi, fantasy, superheroes or anything else, Zen Studios have pretty much got you covered but where they have excelled over the last few years have been their stunning tables based on the Marvel comics franchise. Over the last twelve months, Zen Studios took this a step further and branched out into their first Marvel movie tie-ins, first with a table based on Guardians Of The Galaxy, followed by the recent Avengers: Age Of Ultron and now this week’s release of Ant-Man, Marvel’s latest addition to their cinematic universe…

As with the Age Of Ultron table, I wasn’t quite sure about Ant-Man initially as I haven’t seen the film yet so I was rather apprehensive. Despite having no doubts about the quality of tables that Zen have delivered in the past, I’m always sceptical when it comes to film tie-ins and how well they can appeal to anyone who hasn’t seen the film in question. Being honest, my only prior experience with Ant-Man was back in the 80s reading some of the old UK Marvel comics when some of the US comics were re-printed so this table had to be pretty good to stand out.

Fortunately I wasn’t disappointed. Set in a hi-tech lab it certainly looks the part and is packed with plenty of detail than manages to convey the character and what he is all about quickly but without going over the top in any way. Sound and animation is top-notch as you’d expect but the game is full of surprises – the shrinking ball for one which really adds to the atmosphere of the game even if it may not seem like a major gameplay element at first.

It’s just as much fun to play as most of the more well-known characters that have been adapted into tables for Zen Pinball 2 and Zen Studios have certainly made a wise decision in opting for another movie tie-in this time. As soon as I started playing this, before I knew it I’d been on the Vita for a couple of hours and the same again this morning spending most of my bus journeys while on an essential shopping run. Another hit for Zen!

    • Fortunately I’ve managed to keep up with all of the table releases so far – I just struggle finding time to play all of them or competing with everyone on my friends list to beat their scores! Easier said than done with some of the tables but I’m loving the challenge!
