100 Must-Buy PlayStation Mobile Games: 26. Mahjah

100 Best PlayStation Mobile Games 026 - Mahjah

Mahjong is one of those all-time classic games that can be enjoyed by players of all ages and abilities and has been released in one form or another for almost every computer and console imaginable. Whether it’s a pure version with different board designs or something a little more elaborate with story modes and enhancements, it’s a game that’s pretty hard to spoil no matter what “improvements” are made to the core game and Mahjah is the most recent offering through PlayStation Mobile that has attempted to provide something a little different.

The core tile-matching gameplay remains the same here but what has changed is the game’s perspective. Rather than a flat playing area with the tiles overlaid on top of each other to build up the puzzle board, now the game is played in full 3D in a variety of shapes and objects which can be fully rotated and viewed. While at first this may sound as if it might spoil the game, it works incredibly well and while it doesn’t necessarily add or detract from the game in any way, it does look fantastic and the 3D works extremely well and runs very smoothly. Most importantly it also plays a mean game of Mahjong so it doesn’t disappoint in that department.

If that was all there was to it, I wouldn’t have any hesitation in recommending this, but it goes that extra mile with the addition of a variety of themes to accompany the different levels. These change the complete look of the game – not only the background but the tiles themselves from the traditional Chinese symbols to Mayan embossed golden blocks to even street graffiti! If you’re looking for a polished Mahjong title, this is one of if not the best on the Vita to-date!
