From the start of PSM I eagerly awaited the glutton of retro style top down and side scrolling shooters that I thought PSM developers would bring to the format, especially as ‘retro’ is in at the moment. Alas though they are probably fewer and further between on PSM than farming games!
With all the 60 second style shooters comparing poorly to the old style 2D sidescrollers I was starting to worry we wouldn’t get anything like R-Type, Xevious or Gradius. Thankfully Studio Iris popped up and saved the day with Unicorn Saviour.
Unicorn Saviour is a 2D sidescrolling shooter just like the good old days! Waves of enemies, Huge bosses and a selection of weapons to choose from make this the perfect title for PSM.
The biggest difference to this title from all of it’s ancestors though is the use of touch control. Using touch you can choose from a small selection of weapons that include machine gun, shotgun, High powered Rifle and homing missiles. Once selected just touch the enemy you want to destroy, and your weapon automatically fires in that direction. The system is smart and works well Using the right weapon at the right time makes all the difference to getting through the levels and then learning the bosses inevitable weak spots and exploiting them at the right time. The learning curve means that you will be playing this title long after you originally download it and even once you’ve completed it, you’ll be back for more!
Unicorn Saviour though is a beautiful game combining the best of retro gaming with bang up to date touch mechanics. Utterly brilliant.
