While the Vita is seeing a slowdown in new games, in no small part due to the COVID situation, PC and current-gen consoles are still in full swing. The second half of 2020 is going to jam-packed with new releases from Marvel’s Avengers to CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, as well as the upcoming next-generation of PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Already this year we’ve seen dozens of new games, but what’s been the best so far? And what can we play on the Vita that’s similar? Let’s see!
Non-Vita: Final Fantasy VII Remake
The Final Fantasy VII Remake released in April 2020 for the PlayStation 4. The game, published by Square Enix, is a remake of the first half of the original 1997 game of the same name. Final Fantasy VII Remake follows mercenary Cloud Strife who works with eco-terrorist group Avalanche to take down a powerful corporation known as Shinra.
The game was redesigned from the ground up and has received critical acclaim for its tactical and action-inspired gameplay as well as for its music and narrative. Since release, it’s become one of the fastest-selling PS4 games after selling more than 3 million copies in just three days.
Vita Equivalent: The original Final Fantasy VII is playable on the Vita, along with a whole host of other PS1, PSP and Vita games in the franchise. In fact, the Vita is one of the most Final Fantasy-complete gaming consoles ever made! so if you don’t want to play something a bit older like the original VII, you can play X or X-II, which are from the PS2 era and look and run extremely well.
Non-Vita: Rick And Morty MegaWays
Rick And Morty MegaWays is a video slot developed by Blueprint Gaming under the MegaWays license from Big Time Gaming. The slot is based on the popular animated Adult Swim cartoon Rick And Morty which follows the adventures of mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty Smith. The slot is completely built around the show, including its characters as symbols and using music from the show too.
The game is packed with plenty of special features to help you make more wins including three Free Spins rounds based on characters and special episodes from the show, cascading wins which can help land more wins, a Bonus Wheel which can award free spins and other bonuses, and so much more. The game can be found at the leading online casinos and any sister site the operator runs in the UK.
Vita Equivalent: SpongeBob HeroPants is a 3D platformer for the Vita, released in 2015. Though I’m not huge on 3D platformers (or SpongeBob Squarepants, for that matter), this is a pretty good game for fans of the franchise. If I had to choose, though, I’d go with the Family Guy for the PSP, which, you guessed it, can be played on the Vita, too.
Non-Vita: Resident Evil 3 Remake
Also this year, Capcom released its Resdent Evil 3 remake of 1999’s Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. The survival, action-horror video game follows Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliviera as they try to escape the zombie-infested Raccoon City. Released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One in April 2020, the game has received praise for its graphics and more action-oriented gameplay compared to the original release, but it was criticised for its short length and cut content from the original game.
Vita Equivalent: Once again, the original Resident Evil 3 can be played on the Vita. However, I suggest going for something a bit more modern. Silent Hill Origins is a PSP game that has aged quite gracefully, as well as Parasite Eve. Corpse Party is also an excellent franchise for fans of horror games.
Non-Vita: Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Animal Crossing: New Horizons launched at the end of March 2020 and is one of the biggest games from this year. Released for the Nintendo Switch, New Horizons is a life simulation game in which players create a customisable character and move to a deserted island where they must help owner Tom Nook set up a living and breathing town with neighbours, shops, a museum, and more.
The game received critical acclaim from critics and players alike and sold five million digital copies in its first month, becoming the best-selling Animal Crossing game to date and one of Nintendo Switch’s biggest games. The game follows real-time and allows players to craft items, pay off their in-game mortgage, catch fish and insects, collect fossils, and develop deep relationships with the game’s animal villagers.
Vita Equivalent: Stardew Valley is a huge favorite among farming/terraforming fans, and gets continually updated. If you prefer more “modern” graphics, there are a few Harvest Moon games on the Vita, as well as PSP and PS1, which you can run on a Vita without a hitch. Definitely a ton of options!
Non-Vita: Dreams
Dreams is a creation video game developed by Media Molecule which released on the PS4 back in February 2020. The game allows users to create games, music, artwork, videos, game assets, and more which can be shared with other creators. The game has proven to be a hit with both critics and players, and it has been praised for offering users unlimited creative potential. Many users have made their own video games, stunning images, music, and short films with the Dreams game.
Vita Equivalent: The LittleBigPlanet series has been creating worlds and games for over a decade, and the PS Vita has a bespoke game in the franchise. If you’re more into crafting, you also have Minecraft, of course, as well as Terraria. Nothing is stopping you from making all kinds of stuff on your Vita!
