Playstation Vita Comparison: Fat vs Slim

During it’s lifetime, the PlayStation Vita became a sensation in the world of handheld game consoles. Two versions of the console were released – the affectionately referred “Fat” in 2011 (PCH-1000) and Slim (2014, PCH-2000). The last modification received several changes.

Despite being discontinued, the PS Vita is still very popular today. Many students play the console after ordering assignments through writing services. However, the presence of two versions of the console raises the question: which one to choose, Fat or Slim? Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of both consoles.

Dimensions and controls

Both options are available on the market. At the same time, the Fat version is cheaper on the second hand market. However, the differences are not only in price:

PS Vita Slim smaller

This version is noticeably thinner when viewed from the side. Except for the convex buttons and sticks, the Slim version is 15 mm thick vs. 18 mm for the Fat. There is also a difference in weight – 219 g versus 260 g. It’s hard to say that this change is a revolution, but it affects the usability of the handheld console. So, the Slim version is easier to fit in your pocket.

Slightly changed button configurations

The layout of the buttons on both PS Vita versions is perfect. It’s convenient for gamers to use analogue sticks, D-pad, and face buttons. The players also speak positively about touchpads. By the way, the front one can also be used as a touchpad for the PS4 game controller during Remote Play.

However, there is a slight difference between the Fat and Slim versions – the appearance of the START and SELECT buttons. These were oval and flat in the first version, then in the second, they were round and convex. It makes it easier and more comfortable to control the PS Vita while playing games.

Screen

Another critical difference is the type of screen. The PS Vita Fat uses an OLED display. However, in the Slim version, the console received a lower cost LCD screen. At the same time, the resolution and physical screen sizes are the same in both versions.

The main difference lies in the colouring. The OLED display offers excellent contrast and richer colours. However, it doesn’t mean that the picture in the Slim version of the PS Vita is worse. LCD panels have more accurate colour reproduction and higher brightness levels. It’s great for those who like to play on the street. This is a matter of personal taste, but most who have seen both side by side tend to prefer the OLED when seen in action.

Memory and storage devices

Concerning data storage on both versions, the PS Vita Slim is much more convenient for a first time buyer. This portable console has 1GB of internal storage allowing it to be used straight away. To really make the most of the Vita, both need additional storage and are reliant on Sony’s proprietary memory cards. Frustratingly the internal storage of the 2000 series is disabled when additional storage is added making it redundant.

Both the Slim and Fat version and supports Vita game cartridges. Fortunately Sony chose not to repeat the mistake they made when they released the PSP Go with an all digital console.

Conclusion

Let’s summarize our comparison between PlayStation Vita Fat and PlayStation Vita Slim. These versions of the handheld console have three notable differences:

  • the Slim version is more compact;
  • the OLED screen of the Fat version has richer colour reproduction;
  • the Slim version has 1GB of internal storage.

Whichever version of the console you choose, you’ll be happy anyway. Both consoles have the same core functions – touchpad, gyroscope, camera and microphone. And, of course, you can play unique Sony titles that take electronic entertainment to the next level.
