Sony Computer Entertainment Discontinues PlayStation TV

PlayStation TV

As many of you will have heard by now, Sony Computer Entertainment have made the decision to discontinue the PlayStation TV and the PlayStation Vita TV in Japan. It has been confirmed that no new units of the PS Vita’s younger sibling have shipped in the US or EU since the end of 2015, and that that Vita TV has ceased distribution in Japan with effect from the end of February. What this means is that the only consoles now available to purchase from retail will be from existing stock or pre-owned units and once these have expired, the only way to obtain a console will be through the second hand market.

No official reason has been given although it has been clear for some time that sales of the microconsole have been disappointing and substantially below expectations for Sony. Here at Vita Player we love the PSTV as we said in our review of the console and felt that it was an underrated system and despite its flaws was a worthy purchase. We expect to see rapid price cuts before it disappears from the high street completely.
