The sci-fi television series Powers, based on the comic book of the same name created by Brian Michael Bendis produced by Sony and intended to be their first original series available exclusively on the PlayStation Network has been cancelled after just two seasons. Intended to be the first of many shows for the Network only available to PlayStation Plus subscribers, the series was set in a reality where superheroes were commonplace, known as Powers and one of these, now stripped of his abilities had joined the police force’s new Powers Division – set up especially to work on solving Powers-related crimes…
The innovative series had a mixed response from some and despite a slow start, picked up quickly during its first season, right up until it’s cliffhanger ending. The main problem the show had to contend with was its distribution. From the start when it was announced, Sony promised that it would be available to all PlayStation Plus members freely, but instead the first season was only made available in North America. The show was broadcast in the UK on the Channel 5 owned station Spike and only Season 2 was available in the EU on PlayStation Plus.
No official reason has been given yet for the cancellation although as an avid viewer myself, I felt that the show was of a high enough standard to have continued. I would assume that ratings played a major part but when series creator Bendis confirmed the cancellation via his official Twitter account, he gave no official reason behind the show’s demise.

It’s interesting to read his comment in his tweet when he said “…for now”. Does this mean that Powers may still be saved? As with so many cancelled shows before it, could it find a new home and life after death? Perhaps SyFy may take an interest or another channel may want to pick the series up. It’s still early days but maybe it’s not quite over yet…
