Five Geeky Ways to Unwind

Blog

Kicking off your shoes and nestling onto a sofa for a period of relaxation is such a common part of our everyday lives that we barely consider it an optional part of our leisure time. If you’re of the geeky persuasion, there’s no need to waste time unwinding with just any old pursuit. You can find unique and exciting ways to enjoy peace, quiet and relaxation that chimes with your geeky tendencies. See this guide as apt encouragement to change the way you unwind to build in geekier elements, ultimately getting more out of your downtime in the process.

Video Games

While it was traditionally thought of as being an anti-social pastime, playing video games has become not only more socially acceptable but has acknowledged health benefits when it comes to relaxing and helping you to de-stress and unwind at the end of the day. When it comes to the PS Vita and PSP what really helps both systems stand out is the sheer variety of games on offer. If you’re looking for something deep and engaging to draw yourself into a longer gaming session, there are plenty of JRPGs to keep you entertained for hours on end, with the obvious ones that spring to mind being any of those from the extensive Final Fantasy series, over a dozen of which are available.

For something a little less taxing, we’re able to enjoy plenty of other genres, whether it’s platform or racing games and for retro gaming fans a superb collection not only from the PSOne back catalogue but collections of games from SEGA and Capcom through retro compilations available for the PSP. If you have a hankering for the 16-bit era or the arcades of old, you certainly won’t be disappointed. If even that’s too much for you, the Vita still has it’s place with an ample and diverse range of casual games offering quick bite-sized gameplay allowing you to dip in and out for a few minutes at a time.

And that’s not even mentioning multiplayer gaming… If you have a second PS Vita in the house why not challenge one of your family members at some of the great local multiplayer games? It’s not quite the same as playing together on the television, but just as fun and just as competitive. As someone who’s often challenged his wife and daughter to games of Table Top Racing on the Vita, I can tell you it’s an amazing and fun experience not to be missed.

Painting

Moving away from games, plenty of people across the world enjoy painting. It brings a certain calm and enjoyable solitude, with time seemingly slowing as you wet your brushes and create something beautiful and artistic. For geeks, there are a gigantic array of fantasy figurines ready to glue together and paint to your particular tastes, which means that you’ll get all the relaxation that comes with painting at the same time as creating a personalized collection of figurines. Whether it’s Lord of the Rings, Star Wars or other Warhammer collectibles, you’re sure to find figurines that you’d love to paint in your downtime.

TV and Film

Perhaps it’s a slightly obvious one, but there’s a pleasing amount of television and movies that cater directly towards our geekier sides. Instead of just dropping down into a couch for a long night in front of the silver screen, why not make a little bit more effort by inviting your significant other, friends or family over for a geeky-themed evening of film-watching, with costumes, food and drink all bent towards the particular geeky feature you’ve chosen to watch. It’s a nice touch to embolden your geeky persona.

We’ve talked about it on the site elsewhere before, but the PSP is great when it comes to movie playback as well through its extensive UMD movie catalogue so if you’re looking for some affordable films to watch at home, that could be an option to consider and for those with the 2000 or 3000 series console, just hook it up to the TV or even a video projector for the whole family to enjoy.

Chilled Gaming

While a lot of video games can be intense and don’t necessarily help you unwind, others are the perfect accompaniments to a quiet and geeky night in, whether you’re alone or with friends. Cooperative games are fabulous when there’s between two and four of you, and sometimes can be enjoyed in complete content silence. Parlor games are great fun for larger groups, while if you’re on your own, there’s a vast array of online games at your fingertips, like the Bitcoin Video Casino where you’ll be able to bet tiny amounts of cryptocurrency to enjoy the thrill of gambling while relaxing in your home.

Socializing

There’s a common misconception that geeks don’t much enjoy socializing; this couldn’t be further from the truth, and it’s up to you to find the social group where you feel relaxed and comfortable. Even if you’re home alone hoping to have a relaxed evening, there’s relaxing chitchat to be had on fan forums and other social media platforms aimed at uniting nerd with nerd across the annals of cyberspace. Whether it’s coding, fantasy role play or gaming that floats your geek-boat, you’ll find that there’s no better way to unwind than to discuss your favorite things with like-minded people.
