EU PlayStation Plus Update – May 2017

May is almost upon us, winter has been and gone, the weather is getting warmer… and PlayStation owners the world over are expecting no surprises from Sony Interactive Entertainment when it comes to the latest reveal of the games hitting the Instant Games Collection for PlayStation Plus in May. After a string of disappointing months, there are few who are looking forward to what May has to bring, certainly for the PS Vita but could we actually be in for a shock this time…?

Six new titles are on offer this time from Sony and as you would expect, the PS4 is getting the cream of the crop once more. Its two showcase games this month are the top-down shooter Alienation from Housemarque (developers of Resogun and Super Stardust) and from Telltale Games their epic interpretation of the classic 3D shooter in Tales From The Borderlands.

The PS3 doesn’t quite fare as well with Blood Knights and Port Royale 3: Pirates and Merchants as its two offerings for the month (and with both being published by Kalypso Media GMBH it would appear that only a limited amount of effort was placed in negotiating for both titles) so nothing major on offer there for owners of Sony’s last-gen system.

The Vita has two games on offer and if you read the official PlayStation Blog you’d be fooled into thinking that the PS Vita has two games all to itself this time around unlike previous months but that’s not quite the case. First we get the arcade shooter Laser Disco Defenders as a Vita-only title but supporting that – and the final PS+ game for the month – is the unusual Type: Rider which is actually a Cross Buy release with the PS4.

It is sad to see the Vita and PS3 given smaller releases compared to the PS4 month after month and it is no wonder that people are canceling their membership in droves in protest. We love indie games here at Vita Player but is it so difficult for Sony to offer Vita owners these exclusively through PS+ and offer some of the console’s larger titles as well. We have a rich library of games that has been built up over the last five years. Maybe it’s time to share some of these with a wider audience?
