Horror is one of the oldest genres of entertainment around, so it stands to reason that the PlayStation Vita would have its fair share of horror games.
The DanganRonpa series revolves around groups of elite high school students and their school Hope’s Peak Academy. Each year Hope’s Peak selects the very best students who are the ‘ultimate’ in one area plus one ‘lucky’ average person. These selected teenagers must then participate in a murderous series of games. In the first game in the series, the students must find a murder culprit, but if they choose the wrong person then the murderer goes free and everybody else dies. Each game follows a similar theme and involves some kind of death game. The games are very dark and intimidating but also silly at the same time. While each title is a visual novel rather than a traditional game, you will be hard pressed to find anything else like them. Currently, there are three DanganRonpa games available on the Vita with a fourth arriving later in 2017.
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
The Binding of Isaac was originally released on the PC but has since seen a re-release across lots of other systems including the Vita. The game is a roguelike. This means that player have a single life and must try to get as far in the game as possible. From a gameplay standpoint, the game is a cross between a twin stick shooter and Legend of Zelda-ish dungeon crawling. The game is extremely dark and twisted. Our protagonist Isaac has been flushed down the toilet by his mother and the entire game revolves around him traveling through locations like the sewers to find peace. There is a lot of imagery and players can make their own opinions on what exactly specific monsters are meant to mean but none can deny how creepy the game is. Chance and luck play a major role in The Binding of Isaac. Items and bosses are randomised, so you are never sure what is going to show up. Do you take a gamble and enter this optional room or just push forward to the level’s exit. In this way, it shares elements with mobile casino games like those on Lucky Nugget Casino. There are a lot of slots that also share Binding of Isaac’s horror themes as well as the thrill of getting a lucky spin or item drop.
Telltale’s The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead by Telltale Games is an iconic game. It is set in the world of The Walking Dead comic series but features a new cast of characters entirely, so players need no prior knowledge before playing. Players will be trying to survive this zombie wasteland while also making the right decisions along the way. Every choice will affect how a character treats you and people will live or die due to your decisions. The story that The Walking Dead tells will stay with you long after you’ve finished the game and you can even compare your choices to those other people have made. It is a brilliant game the demands to be experienced. Only the first two seasons have made it to the Vita so far, as long as the spin-off pinball table for Zen Pinball 2, but we still live in hope for the release of further instalments…
